Reserva Rio Oro
Peninsula of Rio Oro - Restoration
In this project we reforested (x), while also highly focusing on the water retentiona nd distribution. When we are involved with aproject over a long period of time our impact has higher value as our principle of observation allows for larger agregation of data and therefore a more specific response to what is needed. In this case, working with finca rio oro we were able to develop a strategy after following 3 rainy seasons and seeing their ebs and flows. In the year 2024 we noticed that the mass change in rains that were expereienced throughout the whole country of Costa Rica had a massive impact on the amount of water that traveled and ended up in Osa. This water had to be redistrubuted, something we had not needed in other years, however this mark of flooding was an important opportunity for us to create necessary strategy to ensure future years of heavy rains would be channeled protecting rainforest and important habitat. We mapped the flooding and moved forward with a response to create a man made wetland to hold overflows in order to protect the reforestation, new baby trees nearby. This project consited of terrascaping on a large scale with swales throughout (x)acres. While this kind of work may be seen by conservationists as too much human impact, in our theory of change we acknowledge that this flooding is axtually a cuasulaity due to human activity and that the restoration also lies within our hands to tend and protect the ecosystem we must be a part of it. This is what regeneration is about, it is an active role. We were beyond pleased at the response mother nature gave with the attention we gave this area. within month the wetlands filled, mangroves took to seed, and new habitat emerged quickly for alligators and birds.
